When I saw the title I was thinking about all the drunks out there. But as I read, I found that I was reading about the "fog" of war… A kind of drunkenness in itself. Certainly, amid the din of battle, the best laid plans of the brass and their orders go unheard. The idea of just blindly shooting one's rifle in the general directions of the enemy characterizes the "waste" of war.
I'm glad that you survived the experience to be able to report it to us. And I'm also glad that I never had to be ordered to push forward in a battle like that with no enemy in sight, only bullets flying by my head and that awful noise.
