Like many, I have been there,

Know the fear of a last breath.

Seen the dead lie still as we fought

The enemy, never seeing their eyes.

How does fear grip you,

When it has no hands?

How does fear scare you,

When its face is hidden?

Screams and incessant noise

Leaves you with little thought,

But to survive, if that is God's will.

Tomorrow is never thought of.

The fear you write of can paralyze us at times. Thank you for your service, George!

Love ya!

So few have felt that raw fear that you describe. The point where all the pomp and circumstance and talk of patriotism is lost in the struggle just to stay alive amid the din of battle. I'm so glad that you and your buddies ended European wars and that it hasn't come back to this continent since the Civil War.

We have to think of tomorrow and find ways to prevent sending young men and women into the battlefield and that raw fear again. I can't imagine what it's like to drive down a road filled with IEDs, walk through a field filled with landlines, see a drone overhead with a laser beam pointed on my body, or find myself in a room with a crazed man with an AK-47 coming down the hall and shooting everyone in sight.

fear comes out from thought; it is the cost of mind, which all and every one suffer. In an extreme situation we used to put our mind aside to survive on the bodily level of instincts, as our self-nature dictates us to do spontaneously. Well written, George. Cheers, alex
