The scent was overwhelming.

At first was it death I smelled?

Sure seemed like it, but not so.

Then what was it I smelled?

There is no answer to this.

I can't for my life make it so.

Rather move on to fresh air,

That I may clear it from my nose.

I gave it no thought as I walked away.

Just a sickening experience

That I'd rather not recall

But let it lie and hope the stench is gone.

Somehow I get the feeling that this is about someplace you had to go through during the war. I may be off base but this poem rings of a soldier, "Just a sickening experience

That I'd rather not recall", who has experienced the "stench".

Love ya!

It was probably a dead mouse in the wall. A byproduct of modern mouse bait using warfarin. Interesting how, while it kills rats and mice, warfarin saves older folks, I think.

On the other hand, after my tenant throws away the parts of fish that she fries for lunch, it sits in the garbage and, in a couple of days, can rival the stench of death.

Then again it could be the repugnance of death in general.

Omega Factor by John Henning
