Peace officers choose a life of hazardous duty. They wear a firearm, and sometimes, bulletproof armor, because they know that their very uniform is a target and they sometimes, while generally, infrequently, they encounter bad people that they need their firearm to subdue. It's a life of rather boring work, punctuated by occasional high drama.

Of all the people that died that day, for many reasons, some heroic, but most not. Those five, like so many others, died because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. The good news is, based on the facts, three times more officers lost their lives in 1975 than last year. I call that progress, not a deteriorating society.
