It was in the best part of living and now it is gone

Spirits dancing in the fire of the fire of the soul
shadows of the ghosts no place left to go

all love sings to the body and the world
you may never know how I loved you

oh so very long ago

In a evening by the fire so far a way from home
I was dreaming of the life of a girl so sweet so all alone

We were drinking hard in the valley of our young souls
Each of us in love with what we did not know

Tasted her body many times heart as pure as Driven snow
We had just crossed that line with no place else to go

Picked this day to find a place to lay our souls
We were the wind and the place the early rains go

She was resting on my chest with a light dancing in her hair
I just could not stop the loving as it was growing there

We were the wind and the winding of the road
We had just found the end of life the beginning of the load

Spirits dancing in the fire of the fire burning in her soul
shadows of the ghosts no place left to go

all love sings to the body
the world may never know

how I loved you
oh so very long ago

Soft her kiss upon my check
in the quite of the night

Our souls fell to defeat
we were along way from home

In the fields of last years dreams

she was my lover
I her bad boy dream

Kept the taste of whiskey
on my breath

the world was ours
to confess

In the bottle we were lost
in time for the mind

knows now sorrow just time

Kept the picture in my mind
as I walked the trail

from heaven to small town jail

I was sitting in a bar
fresh back from the war

she walked in
not knowing the score

We fell like old days upon

the life hers was children
me a brand new wife

For hours we were lost
in each other once again

we could never be just fiends
Passion takes everything you have

in the hours before the dawn
we just had to live

We were drinking hard

in the valley of our soul
Each of us in love

with what we did not know
Tasted her body

many times heart
as pure as gold

We had just crossed that line
with no place else to go

Spirits dancing in the fire
of the fire of the soul

shadows of the ghosts
no place left to go all love

sings to the body

and the world may never know
how I loved you
oh so very long ago

Got a call today
a voice I did not know

from girl
She said God called
my momma

I know you want to know
Stopped by the church

but could not go inside
For something in my heart

had just up and died
Followed all the rest

to place where they laid her down
Small town cemetery

on the outskirts of town

Took a bottle from under the seat
sat by the grave

Drank the bottle to the last drop
for you I saved just a sip

Left lying on the ground

of the love lived and life going down
We were the lovers of a time

ripe in faith
we just found each other too late

Kept your letters in box
burned them one by one

we were special just you and me
We were drinking hard

in the valley of our soul

Each of us in love
with what we did not know

Tasted her body
many times a heart

as pure as gold

We had just crossed that line
with no place else to go
