I thought I should add a little note about the inspiration of my poem. Rembrandt In Holland was inspired by an essay I read years ago where a mother of a special needs child explains that having a child with special needs is like making plans to go to Italy, hopping on a plane and winding up in Holland, She said at the end of the essay that she could wine and complain about not being able to visit Italy all she wanted to but then she would miss the trip she is on and there is nothing wrong with Holland. It has tulips, wind mills and even Rembrandt. I grew up with special needs myself and so many people and places because they were so focused on the deficits missed things about me. They just did not pay attention to my strengths and gifts such as my writing. Growing up there were very few people who gave me credit for my writing and dismissed all together including my own father. The point I was trying to make years ago when I wrote this poem is not to focus too much on your child's weaknesses or you will miss the trip you are on. You will miss all the beautiful things about your child and won't be able to get to know him/her consequently.
I may not be DiVinci
or Michelangelo.
But there are dimensions
of me that you do not know.
I have everything that you have
,a heart, and soul.
My desires float to the sky like
bright embers in a fire.
My dreams are the same as yours.
When I'm ill my body needs the same cures.
So, I was not the one who painted the
Sistine chapel.
But, I could reveal dark and light mingling
on an apple.
And though you may have visions of Italy
dancing in your head, you might find my
home land more intriguing and come here instead.
Take in the fragrance of tulips.
Feel the breeze of a windmill kissing your cheek.
Walk across a bridge which is a masterpiece.
Everyone dreams of going to Italy and shaking Divinci's
hand. But there are detours and the art and artists
are just as grand in my home land.
Though I have long been gone from this life,
I have left a little light in some selective
peoples eyes.
They aren't the ones on earth that are readily recognized.
So, Take a closer look and you might be surprised.
Don't be so quick to dismiss or criticize.
I am Rembrandt and I live on in the hearts and minds
of those who are forgotten and left behind.
Rembrandt is no less thought of another great artists like the ones you mentioned. You took on his personality and thoughts quite well. Although I have not read what his thoughts were about other artists of his time and earlier. So many great artists were taught by masters that are relatively unknown, or came out of schools of thought and artistry that supported and enhanced their work. We all stand on the shoulders of giants.
