A new poem I just wrote last night.

Sometimes I think the world won't forgive me

for not falling for its ultimatum of only keeping

parts of myself it can understand and throwing the

rest away. That's just insane.

How can I decide who I am?

How can I decide what, when

I open my eyes in the morning

and all I see is change?

Everything's rearranged and

it feels strange.

I grew up in California.

I slept through earth quakes

as a child. I woke up to

witness the earth shaking

and everything found on

the ground.

Well, growth is like an earth

quake only a little more

permanent. You can recognize

the objects which have broken

but, sometimes you can't recognize

yourself.

How is this healthy?

How is this fair?

I can't change who I am

as easy as I can the color

of my hair.

Yes, there are a thousand sides

to me. Did you think to splinter

them into a thousand shards?

So sorry to inconvenience you.

So sorry you feel confused.

You can't fit me neatly into

a category or snugly in a

remaining space of your jigsaw

puzzle. Why would you try to?

Why do you want to?

Distorted perception is not true .

From my point of view and for what it's worth,
you are beautiful. And I am neither inconvenienced
nor confused. Well, sometimes, but not today.

Another entreaty to someone who has probably hurt you, perhaps, by neglect.

But probably the kind of therapy you need to shed the grief of loss.

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
