.
The wander of my private thoughts, and with them
Dimming star that begs guide me through my dark glen
Quick heartbeat that remains forever mortal
It only counts time.
Patiently embrace wonder watching life’s web
For what is: humor, sorrow on us bestowed
Exist just as they are, force you to break through
And you strain, falter…
Walking stick to help propel, as you recall
Chalk on board, later eye and ear for what is
Trading time to map straight paths for younger lives
Flagstones to success.
There, find eternal pipe smoke wreath, warming chill
Ancient arguments, petty feuds dwindling
Fading with each precious breath as you begin
Last endless journey.
When final mournful skirl of pipes’ banshee wail
Pierces brave hearts standing over open earth
Though they can’t see as you lay at rest, you smile
At “Amazing Grace.”
Though all believe it will never expire,
What’s begun must some day stop. Drink, glib banter,
Laughing feasts, fears, tears end before we’re ready.
Aye… but ‘twas well lived.
