In memory of the fliers of RNAS Yeovilton

An Elegy

At night time, they practiced the sorties

they’d fly over cities in Iraq,

Rehearsals to build expectations: they’d go and they’d come back.

The Somerset night sky was empty

of fighters: the squadrons had gone now;

Behind them they’d left just the fear and the silence – like new snow.

The blinking red craft lights, and green, that

had embellished the north’s constellations,

Those consenting stars, were extinguished above both our nations.

The war’s prosecution, in chunter

of cannon, in chatter of news,

Was forged in the desert’s one hundred and twenty degrees.

Beneath the bold headlines and under

the bellies of airborne crusaders

The grounds were ablaze but shed little light on the wherefores,

What missions of war were pursued, and

accomplished – or failed – or aborted.

The flyers came home who survived. Some were missing, the rest dead.

War is truly hell. Well penned

Although the air war against Iraq was a pretty one-sided affair, the ground combat was very real and very dangerous. In the aftermath the air war was not always as one-sided, especially for those who piloted the helicopters. History may be the ultimate judge as to whether that particular war was worth the blood, as history judges everything in time. I found your poem to be one of the paths to understanding the war and the atmosphere around the world after terrorism and tensions of the time brought about the tumultuous conflicts in which we are still engaged. Very readable Michael. Bob

the futility of war never ceases to amaze me but the honor and courage of those who partake in it, is truly amazing ... your poetic mission is right on target ...

I haven't done the research, but I'm not sure that "some were missing, the rest dead." The air war over Iraq is very one-sided with most of the casualties civilians and those on the ground. Air war today is very "hands off" with more danger from inexperience flyers of very sophisticated equipment rather than danger of counterattack.

Perhaps your opening description could ease my confusion.
