PETALS TO THE SKY skull-heads Smoke fills my lungs, I stand strong. Petals to the sky, I fulfill my destiny. Tears burn holes never to be filled. Demons in my soul leave scars never repaired. Each sigh forces a step back. Each storm bends my stem a bit more. I persevere through the rain, the sleet, the snow. I yield to the sun and the moon. I take what is given. I replace when I’m able. Though dry are my leaves, I lift them to the sky. Though parched are my lips, I face the sun. Smoke burns my eyes, but I see clear. I bow my head.

Don't understand what happened to my comment that I wrote here, but it is gone. So be it.

"I take what is given.
I replace when I�m able."

Those two lines capture this poem's character completely. These lines are almost sermon-like to me. Great study in how we yield to the elements.

Like a rose caught in fire you remind me of the great loss that so many living in that paradise called California and even those in Hawaii suddenly overcome by lava must be feeling. When a rose dies, it always bows its head.

I have a rose bush, and have no idea how old it is. I have transplanted three times myself. I found it growing in an abandoned yard. It was small, and being choked out by weeds. I dug it up and brought it home, and it's moved with us. This is an older breed of roses, and is as hardy as they come, and blooms continually. I've even seen it bloom in Dec. with its petals to the sky. Enjoyed your poem, and that's an amazing picture to view.
