What lies beneath is all that really will matter. Wonderful poem, Susanne.

A poem for our times. Why so many go on the Internet with pseudonyms and masks rather than their real selves. Are they ashamed of who they are? Are they ashamed of what they're doing on the net?

But it looks like the author of this poem knows how to take those false persona apart and reveal them for who they really are. Bravo!

We really need to trust someone before removing any mask we're wearing, and let our guard down. We all wear masks to protect us. Unfortunately, my mask is permanent, but at least I'm ready for Halloween.

The proverbial mask needs to be lifted in order to see the true face, as you say at the end of the poem: "I see what lies beneath."

The truth of masks indeed.

I quite like those Venetian carnival masks
they have a great time unmasking themselves
over there.
Casanova reveals his big brown eyes in the boudoir
and Chintzia swoons with rapture
Oh, I want to attend the Venice carnival
and go to the ball
the masquerade is so erotic and mysterious
hiding your emotion smiling your smile
on a gondola down the Grand Canal.

. . . and sometimes what you don't see is what you really strive for.

I think we are all wearing some sort of masks as we go along in life. We would change it often, depending on who we have to deal with.
