Clinical depression is a disease, a chemical flaw in the brain, and very dangerous if untreated.

Darkened room, blinds drawn tight against an

Unwanted day, curtains pulled to hide the blinds

Like the mask she wears to cover her pain, a mask

Of poor design that slowly crumbles into bitter tears.

Curled up in a ball of self-comfort, arms wrapped

Around knees, mask laid aside, no longer wanted

It turns to dust, as she lies in a troubled bed of twisted

Sheets and unnamed sorrows she cannot understand.

Trapped in a pain that always lingers, minutes seem

Like hours, hours filled with a kind of nothingness

That defines the very nature of what she thinks her

Life has become, just another shadow in a darkened room.

Giving up seems much easier than getting up, her sobs

Unheeded, deep wounds of self-destruction that pour

Forth from a place buried deep within a broken soul

Marred by shortcomings only she can identify.

Her bedside clock ticks off another sixty seconds

Of eternity while shadows deepen…

END

Anna Frits has written a series of excellent articles about creativity and madness (bipolar). You have broached this in your sensitive portrayal of what depression is all about. How well you did this George. As a counsellor I've been confronted with depression so many times. I've experienced it myself and I know how debilitating it can be. I thank God that I do not suffer it anymore. I have my moments of sadness but I don't stay there.
Excellent work.

I agree with others as this is what depression is all about. Why they recomend putting light into rooms to help lift the spirits.

George, your last two lines and description of the darkened room brought back the quiet terror and absolute despair of clinical depression. You have done a great service by writing this elucidating poem, which goes in my library. Dawn

George you have described it perfectly and it is a most terrible
melancholia that people tend to ignore because they don't understand it. Depression comes in many forms I wrote an article about it some years ago and it is very complex and misunderstood, because of the several diffent types. Excellent piece George, thanks for sharing!
