He rolled his tobacco with one hand. He used to try to teach me do the same when I was little. He worked for the railroad his entire life, When he realized he could no longer go home, he let life go.

i was wondering

if grandpa was smoking unfiltered pall malls

up in heaven

and if only the pleasure of puffing existed

for chain smoking angels

left unfettered by consequences

i was just wondering if grandpa

was sitting in an open box car on a slow rolling train

crossing the clouds

taking in a long deep drag

then flashing his toothy grin

and i wondered if maybe

he could blow the smoke

down this way

toward me

let it circle round my head

and sleep in lingering billows beneath my nose

A nostalgia for a grandfather perhaps, left too soon because of all that smoking. So beautifully expressed. I recall when I was young, sitting by the corner of the card table next to dad, breathing in the smoke circling up from the ashtray just beneath my nose. It sure smelled good. And a sip on dad's beer tickled my nose. Never drank beer or smoked.

Never saw one of my grandfathers smoke, and the other, would light up a pipe in the evening after long day working on the farm.

Smoke rings from heaven. Simply priceless.

Captivating imagery. "chain-smoking-angels" This image made me chuckle. Here's a quote you might like. "Mind you, sometimes the angels smoke, hiding it with their sleeves, and when the archangel comes, they throw their cigarettes away. That's when you get 'shooting stars'. Vladimir Nabokov. (-: You have a creative mind. Peace... rlc

What a stupedeous slice of life this poem conveys . . .

I think of my Grandpa Powell in much the same way . . . He didn't smoke, he dipped tobacco.
