His ancient eyes have scouted
the mighty buffalo
to feed his people through the seasons.
He is no longer quick like a fox,
his movements very slow.
But he can smell the great tatonka
when they pass through the river to the Great Plains
where the fearless people wait
to make their gains.
The powerful hooves beat the prairie grass down,
the movements sounding like thunder strong.
Massive and powerful beneath the sky,
driven down by arrows deadly
unwillingly they die.
Old Buffalo Man smiles
bright like the sun.
Deep wrinkles creased on his face
to see the sacred buffalo
fall with such grace...
to feed his people from necessity,
their hides used to keep them warm.
Old Buffalo Man knows that his people
really mean no harm.
But killing buffalo is their way
the buffalo a stability of their lives
They must feed tomorrow's children and today's wives.
That is why the Great Spirit
Sent the buffalo to Earth.
He knew that men like Old Buffalo Man
Would know what they were worth.
