She was begging on the street corner again,
an incessant mantra about sparing small change
mumbled into cold clasped hands;
I swallowed hard and felt the familiar
leathering of heart and mind -
not today, not now
I flushed through hot as with sudden fear
as thoughts of a drowning man came -
but not of HER frail frame sinking without trace
but of my own life flashing before my eyes
like a collapsing telescope
Looking for some change - of course!
What else was all this
poetry and personal fitness about
if not the gut-wrenching need
to sign my name somewhere
or to shape up good and strong
as testimony to a meaningful existence?
The sands of time are slipping
through my loosely clenched fist
like scattered gold dust;
I can only hope that
what has been lost to myself
has perhaps floated like thistledown
as enrichment to the lives of others...
But tell that to Maria
back there on Howling Waste Corner

Kate, your words float from your quill to my soul and enter my heart. Wonderful poetry. Great expression of ideas from what you imagine around you and see happening. You are incisive and harmonious with your world. Thank you so much for your comment on "All By Myself - But Never Alone." I don't know if you have room for "Lancelot", for you are surrounded by knights who adore you. Hugs Bill

Kate how well you tell this sad sad story...
it just tears at the heart to know there are
people in need like this....I was picking up
some medication yesterday adn an older woman
was told by the pharmacist that if she wanted
hers filled it would cost her 780.00 for 30 pills..
she had no insurance...it brought tears...as she
walked away in silence....you have no idea how I
wished I had the 780.00 to spare....there are many
things wrong with the system when we see these things...
If only they would fix it...sad sad write...touched me..
