I am having a shot at something I thought might be categorised as "Children's Poetry"... but I don't know... strikes a chord with me somewhere, too. Unless it's just the anticipation of having the Turner Kostro partnership back in harness - which seems to bring out this sort of thing in me?!
FUNNY BONES
Snow under my boots;
Metal spoon in custard powder:
both make my jaw clench,
my teeth grind,
the hollow in my back tingle
Why IS that?
And reflexes that gaily respond
to a little hammer's glancing blow?
I thought that of these things
mind was master, as in:
"It makes no sense", or
"You're getting on my nerves"
But responses are
delightfully contrary,
deliciously delinqent,
having an undisclosed
will of their own -
defying the process
of thought itself...
It makes no sense and
it's getting on my nerves:
What are they up to?
Why don't they
explain themselves,
let us in on the joke
so that we can all
enjoy the laugh?!

Here is a biggie from my childhood....lol
My grandmother lived in Brooklyn, 3 apts in her building.....very old
so at Christmas, everyone swore they could hear Santa and the reindeer up on the roof.....everyone....kids adults..........BUT ME.......I couldn't hear it!!! AND IT GAVE ME THE BIGGEST COMPLEX!!! Everone was in on this magic........but me!!!!!!!!!!LOL....so I think of it this way........if I don't "get it"

This is good. From reading alot of kids poetry/fiction for the kids mag I do and from where I work, I think this would be appropriate for an older child, say 8-10, maybe even 12. At first I thought it would fly over most kids heads, but I think the young reader age group would get it, and especially the last line which pulls it all together well, great work.
I am enjoying the laugh, Kate; and I'm glad to see that Turner Kostro brought something up in someone - something other than 'gag, vomit, barf, Egad, What Idiots'!
Hope you never lose the child inside yourself. I never plan on losing mine - unless the psychiatrist makes me - but I don't think he's smart enough.
