BRAVE

I have come to
Land's End
of myself

I have traced John o' Groats
round a convolute
rugged and wild
coastline

Passed through
pastoral landscapes,
up and over
bleak and rocky
outcrops...

Still the knowledge
and understanding
of my own
mysterious hinterland
escapes me

Nothing left now
but to cast myself over
The White Cliffs Of Dover

Exchanging
the safety of
high ground
for the surging flood
of swollen seas...

Deep down
I know that
it is self-discovery
that has found me:

Not death but life
Not fear but love

Finally I'm
breathing under water
with lungs
I never knew I had

Diversity
the map and compass
of my age-old territory

And of my raging
New World

And I am not afraid
for life and love
make me

Brave

Wonderful and exciting views on development from a woman's perspective. When we find ourselves or the child within us or jjust discover new places about our spirit...well that ride is one of the most exillurating there is for a human. I've been there many times and always find that standing on the threshold again and again gets better with time. I've never been afraid of anything but failure and then...I rediscover and try again. Your poetry works for me. You are a favorite here for me. I know I've been negligent in reviewing lately but long hours at the newspaper has kept me in town more often than I like. I'll get back to normal soon and be more responsive.

What Makes You Not Brave Is Only Fear Which Is Only Fear In Itself,i.e. Grade School Came Around Corner Of House Got Cold Cocked Punched In Face_Al It Took To Grow Up Fast_

But Then When I Got Into Fights My Mother & Father Beat Me When I Got Home- Can't Win For Losing As My Bastard Father Found Out On Morning Of My 18th Birthday- One Karate Chop Busted His Nose Face In Out Like Light, 250 Lbs, 6'2' Slide Down Kitchen Wall--Me, 149 Lbs,5'8"- Damned Near Killed Him--Like Slaying GOLIATH_

I Still Have Letter He Wrote To Me Tellen Me I Punched Him Out,i.e. How Much Longer Did He Expect Me Take His Childhood Beatings_

It Is All That Takes You To Wake Up become The Holy Terror Called Then Become Known "MAD INDIAN"!

Excellent!

PS: Had Not Thing To Do With being Brave,i.e. He Was In Wrong Place At That Right Time--Hella Way Gain Get His RESPECT!

Yrs ago I ferried across the channel, the white cliffs are beautiful, I cannot image a better location for symbolism than those for a deep breath! This write speaks of courage, in more than a conventinal way, I see it as courage and daring......but daring not in the face of danger but daring as a challenge! You go Mz Burnside! Inhale and keep your eye open, you never know what you will find below.......maybe a sunken treasure ship! muuhaahaaa........pax A

So many times we hold ourselves back just because we think we can't. Very inspiring poem. I don't remember the original so I don't know what, or how you've changed it, but I like this poem very much; it is the the lift I needed today. Thank you.
