This is based on thoughts about the poet and his/her art!

SHAPE-SHIFTING

Poetry is a literary magic
performed on a well-known stage.

The dextrous poet massages it's shape,
teasing, manipulating a royal flush
from a fluttering deck of numbered cards.

Flamboyant and grandiose,
his magician's assistant flirts dangerously close by,
decorated with bright and original thought.

Boxed, chopped and split in to
a voice of unrecognition,
words file in through the door
at the back of the stage.
Re-appearing the same,
they act strangely different.

Inside the theatre, the spell takes us back
to a single reality, a shining epiphany.
The poet performs his art
shrouded in our attentive silence...

Time stands still
until the reader moves outside,
becoming immediately lost again
in the shifting shapes
of the crowd on the street.

Kate, this has a brilliance that makes me want to
go over ALL my poetry to see where it can be made
better. You are so good at putting your thoughts into
poetic lines! As Peter said: "A symphony."
