Flooding down through the trapdoor to the flat roof above our hotel rooms, intense Spanish midday sun illuminates an inviting Jacob's Ladder which entices me upwards to witness the view from a balustraded parapet.
Crowned first with fire, then veiled with smothering heat, I transcend angelic to emerge suspended in a fragrant tree-top canopy. Waves of hissing foliage, an undulating sea of absorbing green, encompass round about: eucalyptus, lemons, palms. Three steps across and I am knee-deep mid-Atlantic; with three behind I conquer the backbone of an arid, mountainous inland range.
Aerial freedom compels me: shedding damp layers of needless clothes, stickiness is replaced by the exhilaration of fresh air on bare skin. Settled unflinching beneath the unblinking eye, the sun's rough cat-tongue teases my inert limbs into languid shapes; my body oozes, drips through the sieve of fronds in which I'm held.
The song of a solitary bird fills the air: a call.
I am reminded of the story of Cosimo, the man who lived an arboreal existance shooting branches of love and courtship into the lives of ladies who sighed moodily in the shaded gardens beneath him.
The birdsong comes again, a kiss borne upon the breeze: Cosimo! Perhaps, even now, his eyes are upon me as I languish unclad in his cloister; maybe I desecrate his holy place, disturb his prayers, distract his worship, his meditation...
I feel the boughs gently shift interleaving, weaving a hammock to lull me to sleep -
