A rewrite of Rise Up

SURFACING

I was locked up as a child;
Sentenced;
The keys of hope thrown away:

Past erased.
Present endured.
Future extinguished.

But I have been hiding in the bulrushes
far too long;
Though the basket has long since rotted away,
still I remain in foetal position.

Yet, as the songbird learns to sing
during that hour of darkness
just before the dawn,
I know I shall be in full voice
to greet my sun as she rises...

Out to sea, the Great Beasts are surfacing:

There is an awakening;
The earth is moving;

The song of the whales is mine
And we shall not be extinct.

Kate, it is often the past which shapes who we are, and the present that allows us to be able to envision and hope for a better tomorrow while maintaining the inner strength needed for today. And, yet through it all, we must always remain true to ourselves and pass on the knowledge we’ve acquired through time! You are a magnificent human being and inspirational Poet. Thanks you for sharing your work.

Dearest Kate,
What an incredible message of hope! Your writing is superb and this is no exception. I am a converted admirer. Looking forward to pouring through more of your incredible poetry.
Love Chanti

PS: Something I also feel I need do and that is thank you for the time and effort you put into reviewing the work of others. You don't simply type in a platitude, you really focus on what you read and your feedback is always so intelligently presented. You are a lady with great insight and an even greater heart.

This is a fantastic write, Kate. There is a feeling of great liberation as the poem evolves into the present and onto the future. Where there is hope, there is also always a promise of better days.
