This is a poem I wrote exactly a year ago - when I first started writing... I have it pasted into my initial "poetry scrapbook", like a flower between perfumed leaves of handmade parchment. I just can't stop pressing my nose to the pages to catch the fragrance which brings the nostalgia of that very special time... guess I am just obsessed with this form of self-expression and communication! ONE DAY
There's just one day,
the whole year long,
when public life ceases,
pays homage
to that which we name
"Christmas", sure.
But how is it that the plot's been lost,
and Nativity's Babe
has long since been thrown out,
bathwater speaking,
which somehow seems wrong:
The age-old message
of selfless giving and redemption
reduced solely to a premeditated barter
of mutual exchange?
And love, joy, peace, hope -
what are THEY for
if it's the measurable externals
of wealth and success,
labels, status, fame and beauty
which are all we need
to make us strong?
...How fleeting are the years
between the annual benchmark,
which bears witness yet again
that we, through "progress",
have lost our understanding
that less is more.
* * * *
Boom and bust.
Seasons and cycles.
Sorrow and song...
Time now to tarnish
cold consumerism's
metallic allure.
"Back to basics":
revolutionary glad tidings
announced by angel throng:
The bubble bursts,
the waters break,
there's birthed again
Humanity's cure.
PS Does the saying "Throwing the baby out with the bathwater" translate over the Pond? Guess you know what I mean, though, huh?! K xx
It truly saddens me that many, on both sides of the Pond, have truly forgotten what the basics are in our high tech money talks hate-filled world; and, even worse, many of these basics are not even being taught to our high tech modern kids.
Back to Basics would truly be a marvelous thing.

Middle wicket or what. This is so very true. Did Botham get many middle wickets at sunday skool?.
Weird how we have our colloquialisms, thinking they are used world over.
But that's a new one, throw the baby out of the bath, and over the pond.
Yes that expression rings bells.
Cept where i live, i am across the ditch from the homeland LOL.
Acutally the whole thing is a commercialized sham and has been since its inception.
Still all we can do is seperate the baby, from the bathwater, and not throw HIM out:)

Absolutely, I know what "Throwing the baby out with the bathwater" means on this side of the pond! I've heard it used a great deal in fact. Kate, your work is lovely.
