A re-write, inspired by George Carroll's "Fences". Go gently, people, into 2005, and may each and every one of us continue to grow, sowing whatever rich seed we may have into the parched soil of a needy world around us. Happy New Year! LOL Kate xx

PLAYING LIFE'S GAME

Life's invisible lines
we encounter,
day after day...

Consciously or subconsciously
we come up against them,
and are forced to choose:

To cross over or abide behind?

By such decisions our lives unfold,
backwards and forwards:
Tennis balls bouncing over the net,
decided by our shots
and line-calls.

* * * * *

There is no such thing
as standing still;
No hope of middle ground:
We expand or contract;
Compete or capitulate.

Remaining the same
is not an option;
Like a sandbar
constantly lapped by waves,
our status quo is a
slowly disappearing...

This is a good "summary" of life and choices in general. It does justice to the original certainly! I would add derision and respect to the fence. Thanks.

There is no such thing as standing still. That is very true and we must move one way or the other lest we be confused with a statue.

ooooo, Kate... it's all there, thoughts to grab, ideas to hear, ponderings that are in our faces, especially at the cusp of the new year... but it's that last bit, the 'foothold' part that caused an audible reaction. I felt that one! Marvelous commentary... nothing beats the godawful truth! (smile) katy xox.

Comfort zones are a thing of the past.

Been to easy for to long. Time to roll up the sleeves and get on.

Or failing that, face an onslaught...

Great ending to a great poem. I lie on a sand bar, water all around, days seem the same, and I'm losing ground. The world lies out there, beyond what I can see, do I continue to thread water, or let the sea envelop me. My next poem
inspired by you.

Remaining the same
is not an option;

I totally agree, Kate; and if we truly hope to make this a better world for ourselves, and for our future generations, now is definitely the time to do something about it.

Wishing you and yours a Most Joyous and Peaceful New Year.
