"Blood is thicker than water",
but how many of us would wash away
the stain of blood-ties?
Cut the umbilicals which connect
like family lace?
Unpick the knots that ruin
the family tension?
Gathering of the Clan -
"because we have to":
air-kissed greetings,
heavy handshakes;
intimate enquiries -
a cousin's failed marriage;
Grandmother's bowels.
But, breathing again shared air,
red corpuscles pulse,
circulation increases.
Sap rises, strengthening the life
of the family tree:
Somehow we are organic.
Not the blood, but the sweat
makes me weep:
drops on the brows of our men;
the warm flush on the faces
of our women that speaks
of the labour that has kept us,
generation upon generation,
adhering to a bond called "Family".
The blood, sweat and tears
of our family Name
courses my veins,
makes me feel weak
and then strong...
I have strong family ties that I've not adhered to because of constant struggle, but now due to illness I feel the need to plug my children back into the fray. Painful indeed. A thick, provocative penning, Kate.
i never knew of family, i only met them once but i understand how some need to feel that they belong and the pain it entails ... i only belong to the wind and that in itself can be painful but i have gotten over that a long time ago ...
excellent poem!

Can't agree with trask.
But you sure depict the paradox of family ties well.
Splendid work Kate. I always think of the family ties as a part pf the silver chord that ties us to Creators umbiliical chord, therefore no matter how we may feel about it pro or con at times we can never truly sever that tie. Love your writes!;-)

Family life is both somthing to hold dear yet at times is very frustrating to keep together. I came from a family of 9 children so know the feeling well. The finny part is as the family decreases I have lost both parents and two brothers the more you value the ones left.
You have said it all in this one, Kate. No matter how we feel about our family, there is a tie that binds us together and being near them creats a sense of familiarity, inner peace and strength. We also share the pain and elation of each of them within a sort of intrinsic piece of our soul where they are part of our very essence and being. Excellent writing, Kate!
Take care,
Sherry
The pain of belonging - very well written, Kate. Family ties truly can be both stifling at times, and yet so invigorating and uplifting and encouraging at others.

The familiar lament of dual-career parents raising children is, "I just can't do it all." The Libra Solution provides an alternative - a more satisfying and sustainable work and life approach - to the overwrought modern day norm.
Thought provoking...deeply profound...you've done it again! An excellent write.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :(
Who hasn't found him or herself, while climbling the 'family tree', out on a limb with no net below? Sigh....
You've so astutely done the ins/outs, the yin/yang of the quintessential 'love/hate' stuff: Family! I love you madly! (grin) katy xox
