TRAFFIC FILTER


Time was my eyes were red,
blotting up booze,
processing pain,
keeping watches through the night
and screening for danger.

Later I saw that
maybe things weren't so bad;
weren't so either stop or go -
not black or white but stigmatised.

My eyes turned amber
through blindfold understanding,
tasting both fruit and decay
that life's progression brings.

Emotions' endless ebb and flow
leave clear, live pools
of deep refreshment.

Now my eyes are green.
