Am FORCING myself to cross over to the sunny side of the street with an attempt at light verse! :)) K xx

REMEMBER?

I remember to buy bread for breakfast;
I recall the name of the church down the street;
I can recite the French alphabet – well, more or less –
and buy socks the right size for my feet.

But all this is muscular reflex –
head knowledge just doing its thing.
It’s not what creates longing for what then comes next,
and none of it makes my heart sing.

True “memory” is what imprints on the soul,
what senses pick up and then store.
“Remembering” is what gathers together the whole,
creating deep longing for more.

Who can say what soul chooses to make her bouquet,
which happenings impact her the most;
each of us has a unique DNA
which to sweet moments plays such willing host.

Just wrote a journal entry about how certain memories are resurrected about things thought settled and forgotten but jostled out of their sleep by events in the present...this is so true and so finely written Kate!

Who can say, indeed, Kate - only each of us - ourselves. And it is best to always walk on the sunny side of the street.

this one really resonates with my thoughts of late, thinking about my ongoing troubles with short-term memory (mild, but bothersome, nevertheless) and also about why certain things stick with me and seem to take on more meaning than perhaps they "deserve." your poem has furthered my thinking. the presentation of you thoughts here is exquisite. the purpose of life is to recapture the memory of who we really are and in doing so, recreate what we are to become ...

i like how you approached the concept of memory and applied to an extrememly creative and perceptive poem ...

A beautifully written piece Kate. I am fond of saying never deny your memories, you may not always have them. This came from having helped in the care of two Alzheimer's patients. One in a nursing home the other a friend and neighbor. It makes one thankful for any memory at all. Besides we learn so much from our past if we let ourselves;-)...My blog right now is on memories. I like the way you dealt with the topic. It is one that can take reams of books to cover.

Love,
Eileen

Our memories compile to make us who we are, Kate. Some memories so soft and gentle and then every-so-often a bristly one will creep in out of some dark and cobwebby archive and smack us back into a reality we had long put to rest. Most, though make my heart sing in multi-layered harmony with my soul. Perhaps I have had more than my share of sun-filled days to pack my memory banks and then again, perhaps I altered my perspective to make them happy memories. Whichever, they still have the ability to paint my days. Great write, Kate and a keeper of ones to keep.
Take care,
Sherry

Memory is a wonderful, but selective, thing. Your little poem does it justice.

THis is a unique and wonderful take on memories. You are so right here. One of my favorite memories was being sick as achild and having my mother of nine kids all to myself. So this poem is a great reminder that we are all different in more ways then one. Glad your DNA is as special as it is. Hugs to Sweet Kate,

Felix

I think I like this maybe the best of all yours- then again, too, I always say that and the person writes another, and I fall in love all over again:) I really like the french alphabet part! I studied Italian for 5 years, can understand portuguese and spanish, took 3 years of french, and it STILL is a struggle to keep my french fresh! It is a hard language to pronounce! I'm lucky if I remember my name with this disease!This is a great side of your writing. I also wanted to tell you that I think you and I are connected minds or something! I DID rewrite the end of that poem repeatedly! If you are ever interested in emailing me, exchanging critiques (I'd love for you to read some of my fiction), ask Andy for my email address so he can send it to you privately. Take care-Michellexxx
