I have had the same thoughts rumbling round in my head all day, which seem to speak into this repost of a poem somehow. I hope you have all stayed safe today, notwithstanding all the issues that seem relentlessly assailing. The thoughts that, tonight, this poem picks up on for me are those of our perception of who we intrinsically are; our own individual being as represented by our mirror image - which can be self (as in soul/spirit) or, perhaps, as God sees us. Outside of THAT particular understanding, all else is, perhaps, just trying to identify ourselves by the material things by which we are surrounded, indicating our "role" in the scheme of things. I think how we respond to life issues in the world is shaped, first and foremost, by our perception of self... I am afraid this is just what "absence" does for me!! :))

SOME SAY

There are those who say
that life is a succession
of alternatives before death.

There are others who say
it is about conquering.

Some say there is little difference
between life and its absence;
and there are still others who say
that life has been given to be laid down
in the service of those
who have no life.

But I say: life is you.

And it is easy to explain this:
night always cloaks
what is in sight.

At home, lamps burn.

But even in the light
there is no line of vision
except the one which comes
from the mirror;
and there is no existence outside
of that mutual gaze.

There is no release in it,
but there is longing.
And not death
but life.

And I understand from both
the one who is warm and
the one who is cold
that night conceals,

and I long for the one who sees me
with just a touch,

and all is forgotten.

Except this.

This is a translation from the Hebrew that I did back in the summer with Israeli poet, Amir Or. It is an excerpt from his book-length love poem - called "Poem" (!!), Chapter X. (Thinks... I hope he won't mind me posting this again... Anyway, full credit and copyright to Amir Or and the complete poem is well-worth checking out! :))

This is quite interesting and definately a verse to make one stop and considere our very existence and the role we play in it. Thank you Sweet Kate for sharing this one.

Such food for thought. Took me years to realise how differently people percive the world. After leaving school. Never realised athists existed. Then to find out most people are in England, and hold such differing values.
Catholic schooling don't prepare you for wolves.

Most interesting thought provoking poem.
Even if in my minds ear I kept hearing some might say, by Oasis. They're a rock group Kate...

This is the first time I read this, Kate. I agree with Jude, it is penetrating. What brings to my mind is that life is all that we can experience; see, touch, feel. If we can't conceive it, then there is none. I think this is one of those pieces which increases in meaning every time it is read. Thank you for sharing it.

there is a soft hope and an abiding assurance here, Kate. I don't remember this and it is the perfect complement to several poems I've read tonight and one I wrote but have been unable to post. thank you, Dawn

thanks for reposting it Kate...Each read gives different connotations to such profound poetry. I like what George said, too.
Ever onward and upward, is my slogan;-)

i have a real affinity with the content and style of this very penetrating poem ... death is another stage in our enduring quest to experience ourselves and to touch the eyes that reveals to us the reflection of our imortal nature ... thanx for sharing this reassuring poem ...

Splendid write on how the you is what makes the world go round and feels the joy and pain associated with everyone the YOU comes in contact with. You make a difference and without you there is no us.

This touches the soul, Kate. We are who we perceive ourselves to be. If we can dream the dream we can live the dream for there is nothing that is impossible for us as long as we never doubt our ability to make it so. I suppose some would say death is something we can't control, but I don't believe in death, per se', I see it as a crossing and a transition, a metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly. Deep breath today Kate as you face a difficult tomorrow. I will be with you in spirit and in prayer. God bless you and keep you safe.
Take care,
Sherry

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
