I don't want to dwell on this stuff for too long, but this is just what I managed to jot down on a roll of microporous tape at the time! :)) The music referred to is the soundtrack of the film of City of Angels... just for a change!!
MIDNIGHT AQUARIUM
My hospital room lit only
by the green fluorescence
of my CD’s digital display,
I lie on my bed moving gently
to the soulful music of Angels.
Legs wrapped in surgical stockings,
I exercise like a mermaid,
piking the air horizontal and vertical,
casting porpoise shadows on
vague and watery walls.
Sitting up cross-legged
I work my harpooned arm,
waving pain away,
watching it flow leviathan,
sailing across the ceiling.
Warm healing
floods the waters
of this dark and luminous space,
bathing me in peace;
what they say about
swimming with dolphins
must, I think, be true .
sounds like have been sustained in healing waters, full of grace, Kate. this was so beautiful. odd, given the subject matter, but strangely serene. lifting a prayer that you may become that feather you like and be buoyed up with hope, Dawn
This is absolutely beautiful. I want to be in the hospital room you are in...mine wasn't as nice. :) Must be good pain meds, for you to swim with the dolphins. *smiles* Excellent, excellent write--so glad to see you back, you and your words are definately missed.
(((gentle hugs))), many prayers and much love, Karla.
nice images, enjoyed this glimpse into the mermaid ward.

You've never swam with dolphins, gotta gotta gotta before it is outlawed. They don't feel like one would imagine.
The posh hospitals sound divine. Try being at peace with 7 others snoring all night. Having to empty your own sit on the chair in public thing. comode? I was using one of those bloke toilet thingys when these blokes teenage daughters looked through the curtain looking for chairs, they even came back in to say sorry. Then being on show like a goldfish to everyones visitors.
You gotta listen to pulps song common people..
Yet I'm sure you would even see beauty in spending 3 nights on a ER bed in the hall, then being put onto an overcrowed room. With a bloke staring all day till a dr says - how long has this man been dead-
It is true! A very beautifully described experience, Kate. I've had similar. I think all who undergo surgery have surreal tales to tell, but not the talent to poemize it as you do! Lovely work!Don't overdo!
it's definitely true ... i once woke up in the middle of an operation
and sensed the pain but was not concerned with it ... i felt an inner peace even though i was "etherized upon the table" (believe that was T.S. Eliot) ... i was aware of my surroundings inside my soul so my body was not important to my sense of being ... when i awoke, i felt as though i was already healed ...
you swim well, Kate ... listen to the dolphins ...
This has such a peace to it, Kate. I believe that there comes a time when we just know that we must move our body, wounded and perhaps maimed, it is movement that reminds us about living. Even pain has it's purpose as we breathe through it, knowing that the next time we will be able to do a little more; as with each movement we relearn our amazing strength and resilience. Attitude is everything at these moments and exercise is what our bodies crave and is intended to do. Like a skilled dancer, we need to see our movements complete, even if we are unable to physically take them all the way. The mind will win over the muscle and tissue with time. You are amazing, Kate. Your spirit is still strong and you are not wallowing in the what if's, just doing what feels right in the here and now. This poem is absolutely beautiful and there is so much concentrated focus on healing and soothing. I felt as though I was hovering over you like a mist in your room watching you as your body gently flowed through its movements. I hope that you will be feeling much better very soon. Rest up and let your body do its healing thing. We will all be here to welcome you when you feel able to come back full steam. I love that you are posting, it lets me know that you want to be with us as much as we love having you here.
Take care,
Sherry
That's really beautiful! Also, may I commend you on your true poet's heart which will not stop seeing the extraordinary, even in such dire circumstances and dismal surroundings, you have found the magic.
I'm glad that you are so alert after an operation, and your thoughts during this time are precious thoughts. It is always great to listen to some music during healing times. Hope you'll be up and walking about very soon.
oh Chanti this is such a brave and sweet write and one that i can so well understand at least the hospital part spend so much time the last few years in one myself, but nice to see you posting I have missed you so.
Mary Angela Nangini's poems celebrate the richness of life and love. From the city to cottage-country and the roads in between, Nangini explores the changing seasons of her varied region. (This book will soon be reprinted in hard cover.)
