CAT’S CRADLE

Curling contentedly in my lap,
blank page waits to be stroked
as we lie together,
listening to soft purr
of Muse.

Her throat vibrates
and I clear mine –
as if to speak what’s on her heart;
sweet claws stimulate
pinpricks of idea, drawing
hot blood of comforting word
that stains the parchment red.

Synchronised, harmonised,
rhythmic my hand responds
to her playful rubbing,
smoothing away problems,
soothing the poem into being.

Work done, she stretches and yawns,
settles down to sleep;

poem rests warm in a sunlit place
as I puzzle the web
that’s woven through my fingers,
marvel at the skeins
of her sleek-worded fur.

Oh it is so good to be back and see the sweet flow of your words weaving a tapestry of thought such as this again. I have missed you so much during the time my PC was kaput but read your messages when I could gain access to anothers PC. Your work is always near and dear to me and when I read you I always see your sweet smile as well and I am uplifted by it. I go back into the hospital for another angiioplasty on my heart on Wednesday but if that goes well I should be back on line on a regular basis soon I hope.
Take care sweet Kate,
Pops

I liked the metaphor, analogy and connotations used in this poem. I particularly liked "Her throat vibrates
and I clear mine". Which creates an interesting expectation.

Great use of metaphor, Kate! A poem has a life of its own, calling, tempting, just waiting to be penned. Gosh I really liked this. Happy New Year; great musings await 2006.

Your ode has a life of its own.
One feels the stealthy movement of a cats quality.

I knew you'd eventually come around to appreciate the many merits of felines, Kate. And this is quite a poem!

My little "spokie" had 6 babies....and now she is like a baby herself searching for more attention from me her "human" mom!!

Beautiful sis!!

Happy New Year to you and your family!!

now if those kitties weren't quite so elusive and skittish, with a mind all their own. think I'll try your gentle, here-kitty-kitty approach and hope for something more than another hairball poem. Dawn

I love this, Kate, the way you create a sense of calm by using the nature of a cat to initiate the muse and coax the poem from you. The muse, like a cat will find a way to get our attention if that is its goal and any attempt by us to ignore either will be futile. I would have to say that this is purr-fect, Kate...oooh, sorry about that! LOL
Take care,
Sherry

This has a beautiful and relaxing feel and tone about it Kate, that lulls you into a very relaxed state of mind
It is when we are in this state of grace and calm, that we construct our best and most dynamic work
This is a joy to read and receive

The lure of the muse and the moods that arouse the pen to action is so prevelant in your work this is crafted wonderfuly. Enjoyed the actions and expressions given the muse of feline nature. Creative gem I so enjoyed the read.

soothing the poem into being." is the cats meow in this gem!

Delightful and so true when from your mind to paper a poem is born. Splendid in its construction and analogy to a sweet purring kitten. Wish I thought of that.

This one emerges from a veneer of domestication. In appreciation of affection with strong independence, lithe and silent, your poem is a sign of fertility (New Year) and good omen. In Norse myth, the cat pulled the chariot for Freyja, the goddess of love, as well as of battle and dead. In ancient Greece, cats were associated with devotees of Dionysus--the maenads, or mad women who wore cat skins during their frenzies. OH...Kate, put on a cat skin, will ya! Shapeshifter in gear, cat familiar of an 18th Century Salem Witch.

Gotta Broom, go flying back into the Den, Kate. See you there, in cat skin!

Crivens, we are from the same cattery, kate. :-))Have you a snake poem, too? It wouldn't surprise me. Sometimes we are drawing water from the same well, at the same time. Past Midnight, and the cats are out hunting, but I'm off to bed now. Big travelling day tomorrow.
In Dublin's fair city.... goodnight, purrfect synchronicity, Kate.
