A rewrite that I did in conjunction with Dreamcatcher... very much its companion! :)) K xx

ODE TO SLEEP

You lay me like a lover, cover me
with white flag of peace, obliterating pain,
sweetening the bitter pill of all that remains
unresolved.

Understanding when I make no sense
you hush my skewed interpretation of life.

I am a complete pushover, sinking deeper into you:

a bird who has lost the will to fly…
…until you give me wings.

Your words are the 'wings' upon which my imagination takes flight. I loved the line 'sweetening the bitter pill of all that remains unresolved'. I can relate to this in so many ways. Aaah sleep.

It seems to me that most people really don't appreciate the beauty and blessing of a good night's sleep until we don't have one and are granted complainer's rights because of it..and then I read your words and knew that I really do appreciate the amazing balm that soothes as I slip into a dream-space. There are those who avoid sleep and say, "they will sleep in the grave," but for me, sleep is like the gentle lapping of a wave upon my weary body and soul that cradles me and rocks me peacefully, stripping all the roughness from my day. Gorgeous write, Kate!
Take care,
Sherry

FELIX!!! Totally floored by this sublime outpouring of beautiful poetry which far surpasses this rewrite, I have to say... I would be so honoured if you would post your gorgeous Bird Of Dreamland as it is waaaaaaaaaay too precious to have tucked away just in comment - no need to say how it came to be, cos just having it here on my page is credit enough. This is truly why I love writing... if it can touch another in ways that inspire and cause wonderful works like this, then I am more than delighted. Thank you so very much for doing me this honour and yours is a most precious Ode to that most sacred and mystical of birds. I am touched and flattered. Bless you, LOL Sous-Chef Poetess Kate xx !! :))

Oh yes, most times rejuvenating peace. You've described that gorgeous greedy sinking into peace beautifully, Kate! Other times, such as my sleep last night-fraught with nighmarish images that woke me up. Wouldn't you know the first dream I remembered in who knows how long would be this. Hope tonight's dreams give me wings. Wonderful poem!!

As I sink I rise
To the stars of heaven's gate
to the dream of love eternal
I absorb until I wake

sweet be the bird of dreamland
constant and sublime
hold me invivisible arms
in sleep my heart is thine...

Sorry sweet Kate these lines just came to me after reading your wonderful ode and thought I could offer them up to your master poetess thoughts.
Hugs,
Pops
