ELEGY

It’s been three months
and the jealous shadows
of arcing limbs of trees
grow longer,
claiming your bones
as their own.

Your bed now indistinct under
nature’s rampant counterpane;
swaddled in peace, you are
at one with your roots.

I tug at covering blades as if
to share your breath and blood,
dry-parched as summer’s hay;

to you I remain connected:
your soil, your roots, your shaded trees.

Watering your grave, there’s unity;
my life flows effortless down,
saturating the whole earth...

At your feet a memorial,
witness to a village son whose life
was taken by some foreign city,
distant with its steel and glass.

I sprinkle his stone too, marvelling
as words etched in marble and ink
sparkle to life refreshed:

“He left behind
the light of a bright meteor.
He will not be forgotten”

In me he lives today.

Yet another example of poetic brilliance at work. My words will not do justice. I find myself shaking my head in amazement whenever I read your work and at times I confess to feeling pangs of envy. If only I had your gift for expression. *sigh*
Write on...and never stop.

I've come to this poem several times since its initial posting and I am always ushered into respectful silence. It can be that way sometimes.

Oh Kate, so beautiful...

My heart was split and a flower appeared;
and grace sprang up; and it bore fruit
for my God.

So gripping Kate, and takes each of us to a similar time of grief. Contemplating that time of mine and the sadness that consumed me, yet I chose to remember the light he brought into my life and that of everyone who loved him. He lives on in my heart. Magnificently composed KAte.
Love,
Taylor~

When I was a child I found graveyards to be unsettling but now I go there to listen to the stories that those laid to rest are aching to tell. A family of spirits, some long forgotten, each with a message to deliver to the living. Walking there, I feel the connection of the circle of the everlasting. They come to life through us if only for a moment and touch a deep place in our soul where they will remain with us forever. From the earth we are born and to the earth we are delivered in death. Outstanding and sensitive poem, Kate...ther is beauty in every line.
Take care,
Sherry

This especially touched me Kate! This is a very beautiful offering of love beyond the grave, on many levels. I feel this one and know the elements that went into constructing it. Kudo's!

Kate, you remain in our hearts for many reason; the most heartfelt, of course, is the ongoing love you have for your deceased parents. For memories of your dear mother, words take on life, and emcompass the place of her remains. There is no higher tribute to a departed one than this, which you've shared with your friends. Thank you for doing so. - Bill
