Poem Artwork

NOT WITHOUT BEAUTY

It’s been a hard year
but not without beauty:

cancer has stolen flesh
and gifted benevolent scars;

death has embraced a mother
and gathered disparate siblings;

love has bestowed warm breath,
the contours of its face plain
as witnessed through an unseen veil;

and cool indifference has offered
its full-frontal smiling sympathy.

Back in the old house
in Andalusian foothills
I sit on the evening terrace
and watch kittens in the woodpile
sparring cub-like,
tails stiff, electric;

swallows skim the pool in ribbon dance,
returning tight to their nest
beneath hefty seasoned rafters;

stubbled hillsides opposite
are shaded folds of rose while
cantering stallions raise dust
in the arroyo below.

It’s been a beautiful year
but not without hardship;

hardship becoming plenty
through the gift of loss.

Through every crisis, really, there is born an opportunity. Kate, you've disciplined yourself to remain a positive reactionary instead of multiplying sorrow and it can be seen here in your den and in our dens where you have left charged and uplifting reviews. You are with so much beauty and we appreciate your words of enthusiasm that flow through your angelic form. Blessed Be.

I find peace and acceptance in this exceptional write Kate. Life gives us lemons..I've had my share as have you..but we look for the beauty in our solace and strength in our surroundings as in the appreciation for life's simple pleasures...swallows and kittens...and the basic truth that we may choke on a seed every now and then, but we still savour the lemonade of life.

This poem expresses a healthy attitude toward loss, not to wallow in loss or use it to garner sympathy votes, but to find the beauty, the blessing, the lesson, the gift, and to grow. Exceptional imagery and overall lovely work, Kate.

i concur with the motif and message of this wonderfully illustrated poem ... when you were away i wrote a poem with similiar subject matter but not nearly as visual and emotionally effective as this poem is ...

Unexpected moments
Unforeseen ordeals

Fortune in disaster
Life destroys then heals

Light within the darkness
Hope within despair

Life continues to flourish
Even in the deepest tear

From the depths of sorrow, we find the greatest joys. It doesn't seem like it could be true, but it proves itself time and time again. Perhaps we can look to Job to see that this has been the case throughout the ages. Job had a wonderful life, until he was stricken down and lost everything, but through his piety he was once again rewarded, this time with much more than he had to begin with. Life has a sort of balance that reminds us over and over again...as one door closes, another is opened to us. I am glad that you have been able to temper your grief and suffering with the gifts that surround you and that you have been able to see the light beyond the veil that has shrouded your world. Beautiful and introspective, this poem is an open book to your soul, Kate.
Take care,
Sherry
