MEMBRANE OF SILENCE
In utero, they floated together like a pair of quotation marks. Separated at birth by watery distance, they knew nothing of each other’s existence save through a deep inner space, an echo chamber transmitting only outgoing waves, sounds that were never returned, leaving an unrequited emptiness.
Both were articulate, one with written forms and the other with speech. Year by year, they poured forth words from that listening, secret place where the only awaited response was that unknown echo that had been lost. And although their thoughts were taken and amplified by those with ears to hear, in their soul was deafness.
But with every release of words came peace; a certain sense of purpose finding its way home. With each flow from pen or palate, they blotted up intervening oceans and lay down dry land, building stone-by-stone a causeway. Finally just a narrow, fast-flowing river ran between.
And how to cross? By shallow skiffs, pulled by rope. From opposite banks they set out, hand over hand, gliding along the ferry cable, holding fast their unsteady course.
Meeting midway, the silken umbilical disappeared. Remembering, they pressed together print-matching palms. The membrane of silence broken; the river now an island beneath their feet.

Babes how did i miss this????
it is rather erm unusual, even stunning, your natural fluency with words is second to none...
I wanna make another if a girl will give me the chance....
"a certain sense of purpose" permits the crossing onto that island ... it is a combined effort to reach over the river ... when the palms unite midway the membrane of silence transforms into a portal of pure creative expression ... ultimately, that is what this poem is, pure creative expression ... well done, Kate!
The twin souls are remarkable when their hearts and passions are the same. It's though they follow a hidden road map to put them back together...call it gut instincts.
Love,
Susan
My dear lady friend...what can I add to all the kudos, except that I agree with them and am in continual amazement at your brilliance!
Hugs from stateside.
Delicate, ethereal, beautiful prose, Kate, and I concur with Eileen: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! To have the talent you do is to be blessed, indeed, as is the reader to delve into your words. I'm grateful; thank you!
Read them both and you are gifted beyond the norm kweenkate!I want to meet your tutor;-) The muse will surely faint with pleasure at how you concluded this;-)you have an awesome quill!
I am with Bill on this one...you current day pen is both mysterious and grand..
Never, ever lose that cutting edge...I could sense the tale of the ghostly water boatman, who brings lost and seperated souls together again, over that Bridge of Troubled Water, that Irridescent Isthmus that seperates the Living from the Spiritual.
To say anymore would be doing this an injustice...I reckon..;-)
Sweet Kate///this is stunning and personal and intense with passion and love. I could picture myself in one of them boats yearning to reach the unreachable prize of love that would meet me in the middle. The metaphor is not lost on me that sometime two souls and hearts can be as one even thought separated by so much difficulty and space but your poety can make believers out of the unbelievers. Definately a keeper not only on hard copy but also on soft, stored in the closet of my heart. Bravo.
This one, too, is excellent to read. I'm still working on the causes and effects of the characters. Words flow, but where are they flowing to, and to what end? Your pen has gone mysterious, and it feels good with me. - Amazing contrasts and ends-tying here.

You just keep getting better and better and what you paint with your words leaves a lasting impression on the reader like a river that flows to the sea on which the world can float.
Little mermaid meets the Siamese twins in an oceanic write of overlapping dimensions, water birthing breathing oxygenated poem.
The kick inside! Great!
