For some reason, I think this is one of the most "perfect" poems I have ever written, and, as it happens, one of my earliest. It feels to me almost sacred. It is funny that it has come to my mind again today, as the number 7 is the Biblical number of wholeness and perfection. I have just realised that, if I were to reorganise the lines, it also constitutes a natural sonnet, which I never noticed before... that somehow makes it even more special! Have revised it slightly since it's last appearance here in March 2005. :)) K xx
FLAME
Because a candle burns,
I am not in the dark, alone;
you are with me, but you are not
the molten wax that singes
with its burning liquid skin.
And you are not the cool head
of the lily-petalled flame,
or the pink of its hot heart.
As I breathe out my longing,
the candle flame is snuffed.
Close at last, you are the sacred
incense of rising, smoky strands
that permeates the darkness,
your fire making the whole room bright.

However did I manage to miss this gem?
What a marvel of verse it is!
Kate...frankly it would not matter if this were set in any of the sonnet structures...it is still a sonnet and more importantly, it is a wonderful piece of poetry. I love forms and find working within their parameters invigorating and educational, but never will I allow the form to overshadow the substance, the heart of the work. This lovely piece of yours in an excellent example of that.
Once again, your writing touches parts of my unimaginative loss. Somehow, here, a nearness not felt before. You have constructed an amazing bit of magic, to which many of your readers find a relationship. Indeed, a deep and meaningful piece of great wrilting.
Flame, in this reader's eyes, converts liturgical Sahara into a rite of passage, a herdsman's cataracts, the darkness, a bitter by-product for Sahara herdsmen who have spent their entire sand-pocked lives staring across the sun-scoured Sahara, the perfumed air incense smoke used to freshen to cover the stench of impending death, the flame licking steel pokers turned red in the fire, cauterizing wounds on the camels, the herdsmen standing around the dying man, holding lit candles in vigil. I can hear this poem echo from the 7 pillars of salt transported across the desert...the reading of this to the dying herdsman for his last rites...those candles in the Sahara don't last but 7 seconds because of the heat, Kate...
I can certainly see why this is near and dear to your heart. It is truly a lovely poem with a natural flow and it captures the imagination of the reader as you allow us a peak into your thoughts of love. Very nice Sweet Kate.

WOW KB ... this early write of yours certainly transcends the basic somatic construct and embraces the heart and soul found within living things.
It also seems to me to be a great analogy for inner strength - unfeigned -and the lasting attributes found only in a living breathing relationship with the Most High Spirit. Well done!
Blessings and Light ...

Great contrast, between the flame of a candle and that of love. Very symbolic. Victor
