CIO-CIO SAN

Pin the wings of my heart
and, arms outstretched,
I will suffocate,
hang my head and die,
spirit and bones broken and
turned to dust.

Let my bleeding colours go
that I may choose to come to you,
settle on your lips
like a kiss,

my breath the wine of summer sun,
my eyes the crushed velvet glimmer
of an Emperor’s concubine.

Madam of your collection,
bidden yet untamed.

It is a beautiful poem - to be read again and again -because Madame Butterfly comes to mind so strongly, this did feel Geisha, but there are many readings here, once i get past thinking about Madame Butterfly! - the Geisha strength and awareness of position, 'bidden yet untamed' is powerful and dignified, within a particular society and timeframe, and clearly she wants him, tho a modern pair of eyes sees the Patriarchy clearly also - 'yet' rather than 'but untamed' is a good choice i think, both hopeful and tragic - (was the self sacrifice and suicide of Cio-Cio san for honour more than it was for love? and as i think(?) her love for her husband was also true, i wonder where she fluttered and settled after the blood seeped through the white scarf at her neck) Your first verse - i must read this poem again now! and forget Madame Butterfly, then the Christian imagery and focus on the free, unfettered heart, choice (and no choice), the delicacy and brevity with which this is written, and the strength and drama of 'bidden yet untamed' - blimey Kate!! Got me thinking - great poem to read, sorry i think i have rambled, it's the Sangria!!! - thank you xx:o)hic - Nicky xx

Awesome, profound, complex. Let you go so that you, untamed, become a magnificient spirit who bestows themselves willingly. And such imagery. "my breath the wine of summer sun" wow. beyond excellent to gigantic. Liz

How can I possibly even think of adding to what Alexandra has expressed. I am humbled both by your poem and by her review. A most meaningful write, Kate. Thank you. Love and blessings to you,

Regis

Dearest Kate, the first impression upon reading this poem is one of sheer and whole magnificence that leaves me breathless... but then, as my perceptions, my senses, follow the cadence of some of the most stunning metaphors I've ever read, breath returns in gasps - and there is this ambiguous, paradoxical longing to extend the incredible voluptuousness of this "torment"... and yet to "unpin" wings, breath, heart and colours. And, in the colours of this reader's own memories, suddenly flutters the hue... of a day when this also ever "untamed" one flew the bindings for the whole rainbow and beyond. Domo arigato gosaimasu, beautiful Kate San, and may your colours, all of them, remain untamed!
Love & many {{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}

Cio-Cio San earns a thimble cup of saki - the fortune cookie strip of calligraphy, this poem inspires the Yellow Turban rebellion (AD25-c.204) a religious uprising that is sexually inspired, named after the scarves the Taoist armies wore, which was a factor in ending the late Han dynasty. The Yellow Turbans practiced ho-ci'i - "uniting the male and female essence" - and their slogan, "sexual intercourse will gain absolution from all sins." A succession of boy emperors had led to weak and corrupt government, at the same time that a fairly organized Taoist church was established. Music and painting played an important role in the courtesan's repertoire, they were the best educated and most accomplished women (differences noted with the concubine??) ...a loin strengthener, Kate!

Love,
Sage

"I will suffocate, hang my head and die..." this beautiful line as it applies to the stangling of ones heart and desires is so intense. I can feel the immense sadness and my own heart beats faster thinking of love stiffled in such a sweet lady. This is beautiful my sweet dear Kate and I hope you that this is never your true feelings for your passion and love is that of dreamer who's heart can never be stilled.
Biggest of hugs from across the deep waters.
