Winter Warming

... Ah! Them's were the days... A bit of nostalgia here, produced at a recent workshop on the use of colour in poetry (focussing on just one, in this instance). There was no figgy pudding for me THAT day, I seem to remember, but the thickness of the ice on the milldew pond was divine for body-skating... perhaps I didn't mention that! May this Christmas and New Year Season find you all in the best of tempers, healthy and expectant of good things to come - or, at least, ever-hopeful of such! Wishing you much mistletoe and merriment.... :)) Kate xx

WINTER WARMING

My cheeks burned with humiliation
as your fury collided with my rage,
the raw flat of your hand hard
on the mottled flesh
of my winter-chilled thigh.

All we could see was red;
rags to each other’s bull,
we locked horns with
words’ heated exchange.

By firey sundown, all was forgiven –
the mark of your lipstick a butterfly
soft on the bedtime blush
of my eight-year old brow;

my trembling, red-breast robin heart
puffing out its chest.

Hot to warming and forgiving. Yes, that's the way to be. Liz

If I was given a choice of only one word from a list of endless superlatives that could be used to describe your work it would be 'original'. I'm so envious of your gift for expression. I feel clumsy by comparison. This poem is utterly superb.

I have to cofess its not just the weather that leaves me cold at Christmas. I think you have captured well how it is a stressful time when expectations are set to high and tempers easily fray.

Nice that it all blew over by bedtime though.

I love it. The one thing that threw me, though, was that I didn't know this was a child/adult relationship till the end. Lots and lots of red-- You wear/write it well. --Charlie

I can feel the impact of the red as abusive and angry...striking out at a child and a child striking back verbally in defiance but also can see the red of need to be loved and forgiven when the moment is right and lips meet skin. This is very strong and straight shooting and enjoyed the vividness of it all my sweet Kate.

Kate,

I recall a few warming taps in my time but as you say all was suddenly left behind. Love conquers all. Your introduction was quite homey my friend. What is figgy pudding? Can't say I have ever had the pleasure of tasting it. Peace, Love and Blessings to You and Yours. Happy New Year.

Very Good colour red! An emotional days journey, complete and sweetly told - and hm. it 's expanding this piece of yours - I think you got a brill poem here on the emotional psychology of conflict and resolution - is forgiveness a butterfly? I think so - liked the fiery red, to healthy blush to robins proud breast -i think this is a very cool poem! Thanks for the read Kate, Nicky xx

This would be a case for childline these days -0800 1111...
awww, well least you made up, after the fire "red" and the tears "crystal" with the quivering bottom lip. and went cuddly snuggly to bed with that ouch on the thigh.
I hated it on a cold day being hit on the thigh by a football, and carried on playing with eyes watering in pain, pretending it didn't hurt.

Keep the home fires burning...
