My heart goes out to the families of the five British school-leavers tragically killed in a road accident in Ecuador this weekend. My own 18-yr old has returned safely from South Africa but is now in Peru for four months... living and loving every minute! :)) As we know, life is a process of letting go. May you and yours stay safe whilst experiencing all that there is for you to know and have. Love, Kate xx
TWO DAYS’ LATER
He sees her bronzed young body
swaying with the movement of the
beaten-out bus; a tendril from her
loosely-pinned hair shaken free,
bouncing along with the bumps.
Her slender, multi-ringed fingers
grip the rail of the seat in front,
steadying herself on the bends.
She’s gingerly touching the sore spot
where her cut-away tee leaves
too much fair skin to burn.
He hears her high-pitched squeal,
her ridiculous girly gush of words
as she shouts above mates’
animated chatter.
Sweating, he imagines her muscles
freeze, her almond eyes opening wide
in that moment of unavoidable impact;
bright-cloth bundles, boxes of fruit;
caged birds and rucksacks: everything
ricochets like buttons in a tin.
Then the acres of flesh slamming together,
hurling apart: shooting like soft bullets
through glass;
merging heaps of different-colour skin.
Pools of same-colour blood.
In his hand he feels again
that felt-tip that never worked,
signing her backpack “Have fun,
love Dad”.
He turns to face the cameras, saying:
“Everything is out there. Travel if you can.
Life is a risk anyway”.
You took reality further, fixed the tragedy
with all the life that is there, until the moment
that freezes the vivid details forever.
As always, this is so beautifully written.
WOW! This is tragic.
Your imageries kept my stare in a gaze!
My prayers go up to those who lost their lives so early~! :(
Your heart is positive with your son Kate, and your love is strong!I see it in his smile!
Warm and Strong!
Great poem filled with such truth of life, even when filled with such sadness!
It's so weird and strange to let go, but as I say/write it - I see mother birds letting their little ones fly! Strong and Wise!
Write On!

Sadness and heartbreak in one unexpected moment...I know this so well having lost my son in an accident.
You wrote this with such compassion...

Sadness here...much of it... As a mother who lost a child four years ago, I can feel the pain in this write..but your final words speak truth...we need to continue to live!
The pain of this one shot through me like an arrow and impacted straight on my heart. As a father when my daughter started flying as a flight attendent and got posted all the way across the country my heart ached and I kept tears hanging on the edge of my eyelids all the while she was gone. Each time I heard of a plane crash, a terrorist attack, or somthing evil going on close to where she lived I would be glued to radio or TV and sitting on the phone till I heard from her.Oh I know we have to let go and let them find their own way but as parents if we love them we never stop worrying when they are not within our sights.
Thank you for this very moving piece sweet Kate and may whatever Gods that be keep your son safe and return him to you soon.
hugs

powerful storytelling Kate,i found very emotional to read, the last two stanzas especially- i didnt know about this one accident in Ecuador - Peru eh? Never managed to get there and always intended to - a few more months of what i need to do on my adventure here, and i'm on my merry way again -his memories of this time he is having will last all his life and teach him so much, :) you know all this, and that all you have taught him, his sense, will help keep him safe and full of wonder through his adventures - great poem, 'life is a risk' and amazing, especially for the brave of good heart and the adventurous spirit. Thanks for the read Kate, Nicky xx
Life is so fragile... Is it better to allow our fears to keep us within the box where we feel safe? I think of all I would have missed out on if I had been too afraid to step out of my comfort zone and into what has become my second home...Haiti...
Thank you for sharing this heart-wrenching story so eloquently... It made me want to turn away from the sights, so realistically you drew them...
Such a tragedy when life is taken and cut so short. Hold and treasure all close to your heart and tell them you love them with all your being. This really breaks my heart and I pray for those lives cut short....
I think I broke my nose... and I'm crying... (I never cry, Kate...) You made it so very real... turning news lines into next-seat-over passionate experiences... and my guts are still writhing from the impact. --Charlie
...one can never know the moment...youth will disappear...in smiles of the journey...so taken...the moment truly lived. Emotional Kate...and of loss...disappearing ink...your words hold the risked wishes of many...that misfortune could not.
light of remembrance...

My father told me long ago that I could do or go any plce I really waznted to go. That never changed and the miles, stories and beautiful people gave me hope that all is not what we see on the news or papers. I haven't regretted a step. A good mother gives wind beneath the wings of her cchildren.

You've captured the moments well in this poem, Kate. The moments of joy, happiness, childhood, adventure ~~~ SNAP ~~~ seconds later only sadness, despair, broken bodies...and hearts...are the vivid images. I don't think anyone could have kept these young ones from this sad moment in time.
Blessings and prayers to surviving families and friends.
And for the safety of your son.
Love, Micke
Once out from our protective cover we have no control of destiny. Letting go is not only a part of their growth but ours also. A sad and tragic accident. Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.
Tender and loving recreation of tragedy settling in on youth serving other. How delicately described by one of our best. Sharing this kind of writing is good for each of us. We are each and all bound together with the tendrils of danger and love. It may be folly to say so, but no regrets should result from giving them the elasticity of, "going it on their own." Lovely tribute to your friends. - Bill
We can't shy away from death or know when it will call on us. May all their souls know God's peace. God's compassion on their loved ones.

a catastrophe rendered eloquently if not delicately; in the splitsecond fracture of the whole world coming undone. .. . you somehow captured the beauty, the breaking, the breath, and the balance of all forces. ..
blessings to every thing and one involved in this.

Sad piece of writing, but with a feel of "you gotta reach for what you believe in" in the words and verses . . . Tradgy can happen in our front yard . . . Sweet/Sour here . . .
Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.
A wicked Cajun Fairy named Robes Pierre entered the impenetrable Magical doll land of Sha Bebe. Queen Faustina, the ruler of the doll land, thought she had destroyed him, but he's back! Will the doll land survive his evil ways?
