BUT THEN,

sometimes,
all you can do
is put your hands
on the wheel,
your foot down
and drive –

through the avenue
of trees, late-summer
sun strobing your retinas,

stroking that soft thing
(that is your empty mind)
like a faintly-purring cat,
stretching.

And sometimes,
that faintly-purring cat
(that is your empty mind)

is the furry throb curled
in the basket of your chest
(that untidy nest
of speckled-egg unthoughts),

sleeping there
with one eye open;

or out hunting down
its own slinky highways,

knowing nothing but the neon
of that avenue of trees,
its blinking light and shade,

your foot down,
hands on the wheel:

just You.

Going.

Oh baby, so perfect of a Sammy Haggar "I Can't Drive 55!" Does Van Halen have even a speed limit? Better follow it up with Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell cranked! Oh, yea, then Tracy Chapman's Fast Car - that fuzzy paraphernalia hanging dice on the rearview and some leopard throws on the seats, the answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind and Dylan Street is just 'round the corner with Devo, Whip it Good and Jan and Dean's Deadman's Curve throws us into reverse emotions, peelin' rubber back to that Sugar Shack where the Archies met Honey Comb and Secret Agent Man...good to see you tuned that ol' jalopy, Kate...radiator hose in good shape? Short piece of rubber expands...But then...no ass-phalt of ours...

Love,
Sage

"...that untidy nest of speckled-egg unthoughts"...I can identify with completely when so much is a jumble and confusion and driving or walking alone may help to sort, or may not, but giving it expression is the thing and you do that very well. Thank you, Kate, for this.

And the faster one drives, the more racier the mind becomes until your thoughts are swirling in a vortex, well said. Missed you, hope all is well...

I did just that when I was recently chased out of New Orleans by a hurricane. And I'm glad I did; I found many marvelous things along the way.

Partially quoting Charlie, below, "This poem took me on quite a different journey from the other reviewers"; in fact, it took me... exactly where I am, now, just going, not sure where and not sure I care, kind of in a mindless drone, and yet... definitely feeling the throb in that "basket... that untidy nest of speckled-egg unthoughts" (this image is pure brilliance) in my chest! :0) This drive, my dearest Kate, makes me not lose hope that something may actually hatch, when it's ready, along the way! Love it, love to read you again!

You're so right about everyone getting caught by a different glint of light in crystals of poetry... This poem took me on quite a different journey from the other reviewers'.

So many battles in life. And you ask yourself, Is this the hill-- the hill I want to die on? And sometimes you just have to give in, regardless of your wishes... what are you going to do? Feelings at such times become irrelevant. Take the achy heart and throw it out the window. You gotta do what you gotta do, and sometimes, that's just to "put your hands on the wheel, your foot down and drive –"

Apathy becomes a phantom itch, but a nice companion-- surreal-ly comfortable... That's what my experience read into it.

BTW, I loved that "strobing" right before "stroking"... that was clever. --Charlie
