She watched, listening intently
as he lay outstretched on the
couch beside her:
the angle of his upturned toes,
the flitch of knee, left to right
while talking of childhood grazes;
how his hips slightly rocked,
the pout of bellybutton beneath his
thick cotton shirt when describing
the note his lover left.
She observed the rise and fall
of empires in every caged breath,
escape from fire racing up the
sudden rash on neck, flooding
animated features and brain.
She knew the mechanics of a
body’s response to loss,
could identify craters in the
moonscape of grief;
yet could not explain how,
beneath his skin, she witnessed
the tilt and turn of a blue-green world,
perambulating slowly through
light and dark of space;
why she was lost in east-west
wavetips of tides and in skudding
clouds of migrating seabirds, towing
the earth through its seasons;
or when the grey in the curl
at the pulse of his temples
became the benediction
of an unknown god,
his voice sponging stains,
reducing scars,
resurrecting lifeless skin
on her softest curve as if
his own lips touched there.
she observes closely, listens to voice, hears sound, colour, vibration, sensation, she accepts what she doesn't understand and listens to how and what she feels, empathy, she hears him, 'witnessed' key word, and aware but unable to explain yet all she experiences, this, like the end of the poem gives a lightness and a dawning quality - Shrink - negative connotations? Na! I didnt feel that when i read the poem at all, reduced in the poem are stains and scars. Being witnessed, loved, psychological emotional stains and scars are understood, energetically liberate the minds pathways, a sensed and sensual revival of both, how it should be surely - beautifully phrased poem, each verse a chapter, last stanzarella a real beauty to contain all this, well done Kate xx
...so glad my hubby is not a shrink. My blue-green world would have turned to green-green in a trice! But what you describe here, is precisely the relationship that comes from a vulnerable being, and a willing listener. And don't our mother hands yearn to stroke the brow (ego?) of every man who cries out, belly-side-up, from the overwhelming noise and gore of crashing dreams? ...our most deep-seated reflexes are geared towards preservation-- first, self's, then others'--trying to resurrect whatever is lifeless. --Charlie
...excellent work here Kate...listening within...painting within...and she perhaps falling...feeling heat...seeking renewal.

Oh Sweet Kate, you captured such a tender intimate moment in a word picture that was like watching a scene from behind a curtain. You allowed us to view each wrinkle and pimple of this man's body and soul and to feel the heat of his lover's thighs looking for relief. I think this is one of my new favorites of yours and defiantely a keeper.

This is really great work Kate....you take the thoughts of two minds and combine the expressed and the silent and they find each other at a specific time and moment....granted the one is expanding upon the other, still it is the way you almost meld them together...that last if brings us back to the reality of the Shrink who has escaped into the fantasy of her own...
This is a fantastic write... for a lass who knows life. You confirm what men have known for eons; women do yearn for instant submission, and for the least of reasons! Good structure of thought, but I tire of so many lines without capital letters. Dunno why? - Bill
Hi Kate,you have written an excellent poem.I enjoy reading it,take care

A lusty, seductive poem about a lusty, would-be seductive shrink . . . Sometimes we just cannot help ourselves, eh? . . . Physical wants have overshadowed everything else for the moment throughout time . . . How else did Eve entice Adam to take that first bite? . . . How indeed . . .
