Daedalus's Other Son

What a joy, while in Spain on my birthday last week, to be given a copy of blues-guitar-hero Joe Bonamassa's new Black Rock album. On it he's recorded a beautiful version of Leonard Cohen's Bird On A Wire, complete with the intoxicating and haunting sounds of Greek/North African pipes, flutes and sitars. Sat listening to this on a windswept beach with the Moroccan mountains rising less than five miles in the distance across a dazzling Atlantic strait stirs things in very deep places and I'm still feeling light-headed! Magic!! :)) xx ... Methinks I must take up belly-dancing!

DAEDALUS’S OTHER SON

Daybreak he comes,
tapping at my frosted panes,

pecks sunshine seeds
from my pink-blushed palm
then sings to me of love.

I am heavy-bodied,
fat-feathered and
only fit for brooding,

blobby as a bee and with
wings too frail for flight

yet flutterings stir within
the viscous, teeming clarity
he leaves me with inside:

fresh visions plucked from
crags of mountain air,

warm thoughts hatched early
from the tender laps of gods.

Wonderful poem! That's what counts, isn't it, the viscous teeming clarity inside. I think you should, I think you should take up belly dancing!
Blessings,
Christine

I love the way you write, Kate -- this reminds me of Pablo Neruda for some reason. Intimate. Beautiful. Well done.

Unique and inspiring. Happy late birthday Sweet Friend. My son asks me every birthday, "Mom are you still 39 and holding?" Are you Kate? if not in years then in spirit.

This is very good and I like the lightheartedness and soft tone you use to describe the images throughout this piece. Thank you so much for sharing.

May the Lord Bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and walk by your side. With love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your den sister Barbie

"warm thoughts hatched early from the tender laps of gods", and, no less, the preceeding portions of this are my favorites. I love how they make me feel...a smile eases onto my face--at the close of this there is no closure--new beginnings flare up.

You captured the moment quite well..I could see your mind spinning your poetry, as you remembered that day as clearly as the moment your words hit the keys on your computer...Thank you, sweet Kate for sharing this most important memory of the celebration of your birth!
Cheers to you my spirit sister, and always remember you are as young as you feel!

So I guess that makes me around 30...lol

xo
Much peace, love, and light,

Mmmmm! I feel this same way about Andean folk music that's played on nearly every-other street corner in Peru... so natural, earthy and haunting, those homemade instruments, they seem made from nature itself...godly.

But music does that to you--gets down deep in your soul. The only other thing that comes close, besides love, is poetry. And on second thought, they're all the same-- poetry is liquid; music is liquid; love is liquid... cup your hands and drink deep. --Charlie

Kate, your verbal transmission reproduced crystal clear images for me -- Daedalus, mighty craftsman that he was, could not have created a more perfect image than you have -- surely, Daedalus would prefer to hide in his labyrinths on Crete, rather than contest the majesty of your poem and metaphors -- may peace and love be always with you my friend -- Jon Michael

Wings too frail to fly? When I was a kid the Fairchild C-119 flying boxcar was a common sight, supposedly an aeronautical impossibility. But there it was. And there are you. Patrick

Mr Blobby as a bee. That, I'd like to see. I have images of a pink and purple spotted bee. No wonder Icarus fell back to earth. :)

Refreshing is this. And has a delicate warmth about it.

Mystical as is the title from Greek mythology nicely painted with idioms and metaphors to make it a splendid read.
