I WILL GO THERE…

… Past cold iron railings

where once we both leant

to gaze at foam flecks

and blue line of beyond.

Then onto the sandblast,

strip-skin beach where

once we let fly a fat,

thumb-popped cork

while black-headed gulls

scorned white sisters at prayer

and far-cresting whales were

their smooth, sacred breasts that

would never be cupped in warm

stones of your hands.

I’ll recall dim, damp blur of lost

headlamps in rain and clouds’

vaporous, unkept promise…

… Like mist, I will go there –

and, yes, I will wait.

This place seems to be somewhere between future and past (and not the other way round!), between vivid dream and sleepy reality. There is precision in your details (cold iron railings, thumb-popped cork...), but also the mist of memory. A beautiful that feels familiar, in a way. :)

Sometimes we just have to go there, whether for closure, to wait till it comes, or for direction, perhaps even rekindle. In any case, you beg the Question? What shall it be, Brillo Kate :) xxCh'erie

Kate, rich with longing and a desire to return to another time, another place, a tryst revisited -- romantic and laced with sadness --I bid you love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael

I'm not sure...seems like you could be waiting along time for a that cold cold feeling to go away. As time passes and the thoughts of what was/ or may never be. Sail away Kate, sail away!!!!

"thumb-popped cork"? You're genius; I love it. It brings it home--makes it personal. Your first lines I think give us this whole cool atmosphere, "… Past cold iron railings" connotes things unreachable but seen, and "where once we both leant" connotes comradery and longing. Together, they foreshadow your great last lines that Amber talks about so well. I love the imagery of the lost headlamps and the distant cresting whales, but like Andy, I get a little confused in that stanza. "and far-cresting whales were / their smooth, sacred breasts" doesn't quite make sense, and it throws me. Is "were" a mis-type? Perhaps "wore"? Or perhaps "their" refers to the "white sisters at prayer"? If so, then it's the "and" that uncouples the imagery. Maybe play around with some prepositions a bit? At any rate, I think I see what you're trying to say, but the hwale imagery has somehow been disconnected from the sisters... get that together, and it will make the "whole story" complete. --Charlie

ah, the mists of England. This autumnal reflection makes one go inside and ponder and wander the avenues of the mind.

...and wait, and wait, and wait!
The poem was quite good, yet in the second part of the third stanza it loses direction, as if the gratuitous line needs adding? Monty Python meets Whoopy Goldberg, the humour fails. kinda spoiled and soiled the smooth flow. Edit out the third stanza and the poem could work.

Kate, you bring to mind:

Look at me
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
and I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand
I get misty
just holding yur hand

For here is where the there is...

waiting in the mist and taking on its form has it advantages, specifically when your bright beckon can scope who is approaching and estimate the time "unkept promises" may arrive ...

enchanting. mystical, vaporous ...

Can't outdo Amber's comments, but I surely did enjoy this effort by you. the element played right into your premise, i.e., that of promises broken, love lost, but still there remains strong feeling of what was once, what could have been, and all the rest.

Lovely imagery in this poem. I love the last two stanzas..

"I’ll recall dim, damp blur of lost
headlamps in rain and clouds’
vaporous, unkept promise…

… Like mist, I will go there –
and, yes, I will wait."

Isn't the imagery of mist so mystical and alluring...Another stellar Kate Poem.

Much peace, love and light,
Amber
