Although I've no heating on in the house - unheard of in November! - our clocks have now gone back and we are plunged suddenly into the prolonged darkness that surrounds our harshest season... xx

WINTER SUNRISE

Sallow light crawls beneath the covers

to blearily tweak a toe; a vibrating trill

pogoes like a penguin close beside

your pillow, which prompts a roll

onto the already-cool side of the bed –

sign that it’s long past milking.

Huc-huc-huc-hum of water pipes

belch steam from the flue as thick

socks slip into icy wellies beneath

misty speech-bubble breath.

Clatter and clang of farmyard gates

make clenched teeth ring until later,

in the kitchen, musk of cattle wafts

from folds of your mud-spattered coat

amid lazy spit and crackle of breakfast eggs.

I can feel that winter, Kate, way over here on the other side of the bed ... the world! ha!
A week of grey rainy weather in Hubei province, so, ah knows where you're coming from girl in this poem. Jack Frost will soon be calling!

Breakfast on the farm... brings back wonderful memories of home.

Love the imagery in this, especially in the first stanza.

I can almost hear the house creak as it warms, see the steam rising from fresh dung and taste the fried eggs just a little crispy around the edges. Well done Kate.

Kate,
I love the way you wrote this poem. It reminds me of those chilly mornings (as a child) that you just didn't want to get out of your warm bed. I always had my slippers right on the floor so I could just slip my feet inside them. The smell of morning bacon and eggs in the distance came to life with your last line...Thank you my sweet friend, enjoy the darkness with your special person and forget about how cold it really is...love peace and light,
Amber

I 'FEEL' THE SEEPING WARMTH OF THAT KITCHEN THAT IS SO APPRECIATED, AFTER THAT TRECK TO THE BARN...AND I 'SMELL'...THOSE SLOW SIZZLING EGGS. INDEED, THAT'S HOW GOOD THIS SHARING IS, KATE. THIS 'PAINTING' IS JUST MARVELOUS! THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS & FAITH...

winter is for me the invasion of my environ by an unwanted illegal alien -- no "wellies" nor breath painted in frigid air like a skywriter -- the farm breakfast I can easily relate to and would surely savor thanks to the memories of my grandmother's kitchen as a wee lad -- days that no sparse light always hiding beneath the accumulation of dark gray skies, no thank you -- I' prefer white sands, palms and seventy-five Fahrenheit -- Kate, your poem is too realistic for this warm weather lad -- you described the scene and human mood with luscious verbiage my dear friend -- I bid you joy, love and peace Jon Michael

Succinct thinking Kate. Your mind paints exculpated poetic vignette's (in this) that linger as a sweet fragrance. I love morning eggs, especially on tortillas with cheese and onions and smothered in Pico Pica real Mexican style sauce. Alas ... anymore, though, breakfasts are oatmeal and berry oriented to keep the pipes at optimum flow. (-: Peace and continued inspiration ... richard

Why did you send your clocks back?
Blimey, it's wet and freezing here, had the heat on for a few weeks.

I can smell the farm and feel the warmth of the breaky. i know your area but didn't realise you're out in the Karroty Kountryside Kate? I can hear your posh voice telling them BREAKFAST NOW! OR WILLOW GETS IT!

There are some fun things to do in the dark but milking cows does not make the list. Spent a lot of time as a kid on the farm during summers but not much in winter but you never forget the musk of cows or the piercing taste of the silo through the nostrils. Patrick

Vivid reminders of days on the farm. The cool weather has its virtue. The hot, hard days of harvest are over for another season.

your sense of humor supersedes your unfortunate state of chill in your abode ... the sing-song quality of this poem is harnessed into a well-developed and enjoyable read ... the prolonged darkness sucks, doesn't it?

Driving in snow on Sunday night, scraping frost this morning and adding extra clothes...that is what I have been doing in Nova Scotia and spending loads of time on my Uncles farm as a child I can so relate easily to this one as well.

Give me that 'lazy spit and crackle of breakfast
eggs' any morning but i'm not sure
i could handle the rest again, those 'icy
wellies' and 'clenched teeth' - no thanks,
can't hack it.
As always, Great Kate, fine work.
