Before Last Call...

Poem Artwork

The castanets seemed to click to a faster beat then normal
Guitars rhythms were bringing all lovers to the wood floor
Gazing across the smoke filled room I could taste the cigars
Here in this humid environment perspiration ran down freely

I watched as the tunes turned to hum with the saxophone
Making my heart ache this music made even the happy sad
Sadness turned to sensuality as the bodies almost as one swayed
Even the candles lights dimmed in honor of the private kisses

Spilled drinks filled the cracks behind the bar but no one noticed
Burgundy wine in clacking glasses touched aching parched lips
The musky smells seemed to float by on every breath haunting me
Slowly, hidden desire began to show and couples left for more

I wondered if this was real or a movie from the past as silhouettes spun
Who were they all tonight for in the dawn they would become just people
I decided to hold it as it was musky, sensual and haunting, unexplained
I would leave now before the lights came up and faces showed

Before last call…

This is wonderful, Theresa -- I'm fast becoming a fan. Through your words, I was there -- what more could be asked of a writer than to pull your readers into a poem from the very first word to the last ... Excellent.

Has all the surreality of the end of a night's celebration: the "wine, women and song" at that "special" time of the evening when moods have mellowed along with the flattening of the bubbles in the glasses. But, far from that "dip" when reality is maybe starting to dawn, along with a hint of real loneliness, perhaps, this write picks up every frisson of energy that this scene you vividly capture generates, and magnifies it in glorious technicolour. This is just so tangible and visible. All the senses are heightened and stimulated wonderfully. Very well-crafted write that is both lyrical and haunting. Like this magical moment, I didn't want it to end... TY Kate xx

Add my second to each and every compliment below. Love the imagery, love the sensuality, love the idea!! 'Pea' <3 ~~~ PS: My son-in-law is a chef...graduated from the C.I.A. a decade+ ago. Doug is very talented and creative, which I have found to be typical of chefs who have a genuine passion for food and the art of preparing it. Wonderful to have you at the Den. Cook up a storm!:) 'Pea' <3

Full of sensuality and truth ~ the magic spell of the music and romantic atmorphere seems to fade with the glaring exposure of light.
