This is for all of us that have lived
long enough to know the world.

Oh how sweet and wonderful
can you remember
how we were?
before the world
could touch us,
Oh how free and pure.
So innocent,
we never could have known
the terrible sadness
that was coming,
the unrelenting pain
that was to be shown.
Lost in our childhood joy
we were blind
to the evil out there sent to get us,
the unforgiving hurt
that sought to make us unkind.
Oh how sweet and wonderful
that bliss we knew,
before our hearts
by love were seized,
until our lives could find us,
when we had never grieved.
So trusting,
we never questioned
the silent betrayal
we were born into.
The authority
under which we were burdened
held a horrible truth
we never knew.
Oh how sweet and wonderful
the way we were,
before their lies could teach us,
Oh how free and pure,
so innocent
how could we ever have known?

The pure nerves and emotions we had that first time of love...the birth in our hearts...this was virginal bliss. i think it is possible to feel that again...those bells and whistles. It takes the spiritual meeting of the soul that was meant to be your first love. Just, perhaps, what we felt in the beginning was a jolt of juice for what is to come. Wouldn't that be wonderful because then...we would have so much more to look forward to.

Susan

This is a masterful work of love's innocence and the loss of that joy when the world intrudes. Well done!

Oh how sweet and wonderful

Very nice work. This is my favorite line. I think it might be why they tell us things like 'ignorance is bliss' and 'what we don't know can't hurt us'.. so they can continue to teach us their lies even after we grow up. Fortunately, painful as it might be, some grow up and realize those are just more lies.

"the silent betrayal
we were born into." is the line that really caught my attention. Lots of meaning to be explained by this line. Good work. Henry
