behind the front lines
with a bottle of wine
longing to be heard
a youngster got his first feel of war
and touched the truth
of his own written word
not knowing if he would survive.
sickened to the core
changed forever by sights so real
he knew
he could never feel life the same
as anyone who wasn't there
beside him in those moments
a child who was forced to fall to hell
into that space where he realized
all the love in the world
can never heal all the hate.
Lost for all his life
save for the comfort he could steal
from those he cared for
who could never understand
the disenchantment
the lonliness and longing in the man
who allways felt inadequate
in his endeavor
to describe the world he lived in
that was so abhorrent
in words that could evoke change.

It seems you are Hemmingway in your own way. So insightful of one you never met.
This is precious and sad but Hemmingway was frought with his own nightmares and shades of happy times.. I live on the east coast and have visited his place in the Keys. It is forboding with his spirit lingering still or , perhaps, it's his Muse.
You write as thought you knew himm.
Did you?

A nice tribute to one of the greatest writers ever, leastways in my mind. The Old Man and the Sea still ranks high as a story that changed my life and compelled me to dig deep to find my gifts.
A powerful and passionate life marred by war, a life threatening injury, true love gone awry, and the inability to forgive, gave this man a rare fuel he used to accomplish great works.
Hi Pierre. Had to read your poem as I'm a big fan of Hemmingway's life and work. You've done him justice here and reminded us all of how life's cruel realities change us and challenge us to change the world. Dawn

If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
