a Halloween tale for my younger grandchildren...

*~ The Bet ~* *The night around them was pitch black* *a witches moon was hanging low* *the two crept closer, flashlights shaking* *walking toward the house very slow* *Stomachs queasy, they cross the porch* *hands trembling they open the door* *Trying very hard to be brave* *they see cobwebs ceiling to floor* *A black cat streaks between them* *as they jump back in fright* *somewhere close a night owl hoots* *erupting from rafters, bats take flight* *With knee�s shaking they move on* *a blood curdling scream is heard* *trembling they grab each other* *telling themselves � me afraid � absurd* *A ghostly presence floats overhead* *followed by several more* *ghouls and goblins in every corner* *on a Halloween night filled, with spooky lore* *Their flashlights quiver* *as they probe into dark places* *ghostly moans and haunting screams* *and cobwebs drape their faces* *They only wanted to win a bet* *on this scariest night of the year* *just walk through a haunted house* *to prove they had no fear* *It was a night two boys took a dare* *one they won�t soon forget* *ghosts and goblins and spooks - oh my* *and just to win a bet* *� 2005* *Carole Mathys*

... not just for the "younger" children, Carole! Classic and sassy... your biog pic makes me think of glamorous Dame Judi Dench, and I could hear her voice reading this piece in her most earthy and yet theatrical, lyrical way. TY, this is sure to go down well! Kate x

Haha! Reminds me of when I was a mere lad and we used to make so-called campfires and tell scary stories. By the time we were through and had to go home it was one miserable two-block walk to the house. Every moonlit shadow looked like the boogyman. Loved the poem for its nostalgic.
