Searching for Me
The girls of my generation
were taught they had no defense
each were carefully groomed
for life behind a white picket fence
so
I wore the face they expected
with each life role assigned to me
face’s of daughter, wife mother and friend
changing them like old hats, you see
They seemed to looked through me
without a clue
never questioning reality
or am I just an illusion, too
Taking at face value what they see
as if by doing more
encroached upon their space
diminishing their tiny worlds
they never look beyond my face
will someone care enough to see
what mysteries hide inside of me
Who will ask what’s in my heart
discover passions that I hold
or hear the poetry in my soul
listen to dreams yet untold
a mirror image I will no longer be
wearing faces I used by need
Time and space, I now have
to explore feelings I tucked away
were they just a place to escape
when obligations got in the way
Years and layers have covered them deep
I must peel them back to see
this unfinished woman
waiting to be completed by me…

This poem speaks of a shameful chapter of our collective social history which encroached upon young ladies and framed for them what they were and what they were to become. Strangely, I know something of this in that in early high school I was forbidden to enroll in an elective class because that was outside the parameters of the life role that was assigned to me as a young man. No one cared or dared inquire what were the passions of my heart.
I am greatful for the opportunity to grow and develop that I see now available to the "modern-day woman." To stifle a soul is akin to binding the butterfly in its cocoon.
"Searching for Me" gives wonderful expression to the universal need to know we not only exist, we matter. As we understand its message, so too are we empowered and empowering. Parents owe this understanding to their children, especially every father to his daughter.
"Searching for Me" is an important literary work.

a very nice write and one that many can read and find themselves searching through their own thoughts...
enjoyed, Art Sun...
I like the way you accept your resolve and responsibility.
Now, go forth and enjoy you, and who you want to become.
