For Luke

In the cast amber glow of morning
shining in through horizontal slats
I come upon your eyes with anticipation
and my heart brooks deep with adoration

In the orange blast of the day
I catch a smile and a knowing glance
I know the connection and tighten my grasp
wishing to cling for an age

In the yellow of canary sunshine
you pulse on to each pursuit
the extension between us renews and rewards
and I see you are as I am

In the glimmer of blonde afternoon
as I edify you in good practice
I am benighted as I ponder the darkness
and unknown that you will see

In the honey of the evening
when your trials are drawing ceased
I protect my vision and calendar
the events to memory cherished

In the waning rueful glow
of a night spent as your sentinel
I quicken to all danger
and question my own ability

Then, in the amber glow of morning
I ascend and find your eyes
in anticipation they explode
and I am renewed
