Lit cigarette dangling
carelessly ashing in a pile
smoky tendrils dancing
in stagnant air
Yellowed fingers
loosely grasping at reason
and finding habit alone
Portrait
Stale fissure
exhaling failure in rasps
pulling hope and hype
back in in equal measures
only to be bathed in contagion
and spent in throaty excoriations
Brandish
Broken ruts of consuetude
worn deep by madness and indifference
defiantly self-fulfilling
as the embers of life's fire
gutter and spit
