A gentle nudge
and you're out the door
no inkling whatsoever
of what's in store
this day has no moorings
no absolute floor
and you find yourself drifting
Practiced pace
takes you to each task
forgettable faces
with questions to ask
their charms are unseemly
their smiles just a mask
and you know that you're rifting
Consumption of duty
absorption of nil
time's just an animal
that you need to kill
each second an epoch
at odds with your will
and you see yourself plying
Retire to commute
frustrations anew
craned necks and gnashed teeth
white knuckles are blue
broken bottle bladework
a new scar for you
and you know that you're dying
