Who dares to venture
into this city of gold
the lair of kings?
Multi-colored birds
in jeweled plumage
cry and whistle homage
Monkeys jump and shriek
Bare their yellowed teeth
Aged
From the chatter
of twisted trees
Stone-faced temples
lure innocent hearts
Who worship
at the altar of fear
The suckered ivy
intertwine with their limbs
Press life from death
Priests offer sacrifice
in ritualistic greed
to the gods of abundance
Blood runs cold into rivers
Oozes from primal mud
Treasure collects entombed
In rooms with guarded secrets
Steps rise higher to the Sun
On the backs of peasants
Sweat and blood
mixed with clay for mortar
But one day
the king's pride is broken
By conquering warriors
Followers of the Sun
are slaughtered
The treasure is looted
The golden shields and idols
are melted into coin
In the image of a foreign god
Who dares to venture
into this city of gold

This has my mind reeling, so many meaning and really powerful tone! I have read this three times already and am on my way back for another read...stand up and take a bow, this is wonderful in all of its dark and vivid imagery! I am applauding!
Wow! Talk about vivid and cinematic - as proven by all the references beneath! I love this twist on the normal adulation of rich opulence and jungle colour. And, like many "Hollywood" fictions, is so surreal to smack of the truth or Truth, even, as others have made that biblical reference, too. Rich and seamlessly woven, like a precious cloth. LOL. I recently bought the city of angels, inside was the city of god.
Beware of false idols. Does have many OT overtones. Nicely done..
